Reading Skills

Learning to read effectively is a vital skill for everyone. Children who learn to read at Primary School are better prepared both for further academic study and for life in the world of work.

READING SKILLS is an exciting new series of primary comprehension books which develop and practise reading.

There are three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, which consist of short reading texts with comprehension questions, designed for use in the upper classes of Primary schools throughout Africa. The series has been designed as a supplementary resource to course books.

Reading Skills:

  • is clear and straightforward to use
  • has carefully controlled reading levels
  • provides effective reinforcement of language skills
  • is relevant to the target age-group
  • has short, interesting texts which attract reluctant readers as well as competent pupils
  • focuses on 'Spotlight’ boxes which aim to encourage guided reading and creative writing
  • consists of cross-curricular texts which will help students in other subject areas
  • is accompanied by supportive Teacher's Books with answers.

MACMILLAN PRIMARY TEACHING HANDBOOKS
There have been two additions to the popular and practical 'Primary Teaching Handbook' series:

NEW
Teaching Primary Mathematics

John Suffolk
TP Maths.JPG (81540 bytes)This book is divided into two sections.  The first deals with mathematical teaching methods, including teaching with justification, lesson planning, classroom organisation, the use of games, calculators and other resources.  The second part covers 46 key topics within mathematics, and suggest specific teaching strategies and learning ideas for each of these topics.  This makes the book an invaluable resource, either for reviewing general mathematical teaching skills, or for grappling with the particular problems posed by a tricky topic.

NEW
Teaching Primary Science

Alan Peacock
TP Sci.jpg (47386 bytes)Teaching Primary Science begins with some fundamental issues about the nature of science, what is meant by scientific literacy and why it is that we should be teaching science to children at all.   It then has five sections covering how to make best use of the classroom, lesson planning, children's learning processes, using books and using resources, and also about different science teaching methods.  The book finishes with a valuable section on how to apply the ideas and techniques discussed in the book.

Teaching Primary English

Hilary Thompson
TP Eng.jpg (20978 bytes)
This book follows the clear, easy-to-read approach, which is a familiar feature of the entire series.  It contains sections on planning, teaching language skills, listening and speaking, reading, writing, teaching grammar, correcting pupils' work and assessment. The ideas combine sound English Language Teaching methods and good primary practice. The approach is practical, with lots of ideas to help hard-pressed teachers and trainee teachers to improve their teaching.

"This book presents a methodology based on real needs and practical experience. It provides the essential knowledge and teaching techniques that teachers require in order to face most classroom situations. I commend this well-written and user-friendly book to practising and student teachers, tutors and lecturers in teacher training colleges, faculties of education in universities and to those working in primary school English language improvement programmes in Africa."
Dr Henry L. Kaluba, Chief Programme Officer, Education Department, Commonwealth Secretariat, London.

Primary Teaching Methods
Dawn Quist
ptm.jpg (56730 bytes)Primary Teaching Methods is an accessible, easy to read and modern approach to the challenges and problems faced in today’s classroom, providing a wealth of practical ideas to students and newly-qualified teachers, and offering new insights to those with more experience in the classroom.

Each chapter is divided into teaching topics which are presented in a manageable format of two or four pages, accompanied by lively illustrations, tables and diagrams. The book includes hundreds of ideas on core topics, suggested activities, ideas for reflection and examples of approaches used effectively by teachers, and is presented in a clear format and written in a simple language, suitable for those using English as a second or third language. Information and simple definitions of common terms are also included.

"I commend this comprehensive, well-written, readable book to all pre-service and in-service primary teacher educators, co-ordinators and managers of teacher resource centres, primary school heads, serving primary school teachers, student teachers on teaching practice and primary school inspectors". Dr Henry L. Kaluba, Chief Programme Officer, Education Department, Commonwealth Secretariat, London.
