Nigerian author wins writer's award
Macmillan Nigeria would like to congratulate Rosina Umelo for her success in the Macmillan Writer's Prize for Africa 2002. Umelo's story, Who Are You?, won the Children's Literature Award Junior Category (for children between the ages of 8 and 12). The judges said of her work: 'Who Are You? wonderfully evokes a range of characters and their community in this story about an abandoned child. At its heart, it is about how people value – or don’t value – children. This is a powerful, yet subtly told story, which is alive with humour and insight into how contradictory we can be as human beings.’

Macmillan Nigeria 2nd Literary Night, Agip Recital Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos (22nd February 2001)

This lavish and successful event, organised around the theme of "Women and Children in African Literature", was well-attended. Among the guests were the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Lady Kofoworola Ademola, Dr Ismaila Babatunde Jose, Mrs Gbemi Rosiji, Aduke Alakija and the Noble Laureate Wole Soyinka. Amongst the wide array of literary readings and a dance drama on the theme of "Celebrating Women" by the Crown Troupes of Africa, Macmillan’s John Watson was invited to talk about the Macmillan Writer's Prize for Africa.

The aim of the evening was to promote literary writing among Nigerians, "and set in motion a conscious effort that will encourage both established and budding writers to churn out more works, and at the same time enhance the reading culture of the country" (Olumide Iyanda, Tempo, 15th March 2001).

Writers whose works were heard during the evening included South Africa's Nomboliso Gasa, Ghana's Kwasi Koranteng and Frank Kobina Parkes, Toyin Adewale, Mabel Segun, Lola Soneyin, Francesca Pereira, Gbemi Rosiji, Odia Ofeimun, Femi Fatoba, Bernarb Dadie, Cyprian Ekwensi and Hyginus Ekwuazi.
