Macmillan donates books
and bursaries in Sierra Leone
Eighty-seven students from various educational institutions in the Western Area
have been presented with books and bursaries estimated at 15 million leones by Macmillan
Publishers. Presenting the envelopes and books on behalf of the publishing group, Kai
Fomba acknowledged that education as an aspect of culture has a role in the process of
social change, development and modernisation, and that this presentation is a modest
contribution towards the reconstruction of Sierra Leone. He maintained that the focus of
Macmillan is education, stressing that successful education must have local roots, and can
only be responsive to local needs.
The country representative said that the objective of Macmillan is to produce not only
quality test books from kindergarten to tertiary, but to train teachers and to act as a
facilitator for the development of local publishing skills. He observed that over the
years, Macmillan has collaborated with many Sierra Leonean authors and specialist writers,
as well as maintaining a partnership with the Ministry of Education, whose deputy
minister, Abass Collier, received the donation and credited his colleague, the minister of
Education, Youth and Sports, Dr Alpha Wurie, with the idea for the project.
Heads of schools who are recipients of the books assured the gathering
that the gifts will be properly utilised by those for whom they are meant.
