Abyssinian Chronicles
Moses Isegawa
abysinian chronicles.jpg (356923 bytes)"Isegawa makes his country a focus of life, tragedy and character that…stays with us. His novel commands attention and…deregulates the pulse… Abyssinian Chronicles…is best read as a chronicle of Ugandan history and of the struggles of different generations of a family to cope with it.…The writing is big, but…the story is bigger."
New York Times Book Review

"Set in postcolonial 1970s and ‘80s, when power struggles are the order of the day, the book is a bildungsroman following the life of narrator Mugezi Muwaabi, as he plots his own independence from tyrannical rulers…and capitalizes on his considerable natural resources of charm and intelligence,…a coming-of-age story that traces the shifting balance of power in any relationship…Isegawa’s language…yields gems.’
Publishers Weekly

‘Precious few novels are as phantasmagoric or as haunting as this one.’

News from Macmillan Uganda

Ugandan author wins writer's award
Macmillan Uganda would like to congratulate Susan Mugizi Kajura for her success in the Macmillan Writer's Prize for Africa 2002. Kajura's story, Daudi's Dream, won the 'Most Promising New Children's Writer Award category', and the judges praised Kajura for 'the extraordinary flair in her writing and the quick-paced dialogue and action [which] combine to bring a community alive'. The work tells the story of an enterprising little boy who sets out to win enough money for his mother to buy a sewing machine.

Kajura explains her interest in writing for children: 'You know, I find life hilarious. There are so many funny things that happen. I wanted to capture the humour of life and, for me, writing was the way to do it. To amuse myself... It's the magic in life that is important. The feeling that against all odds, against what your eyes tell you is a hopeless situation, something good can come out AWPlogo.gif (7148 bytes)of it. Fun and hope. Those are the elements which enthralled me as a child.'

Macmillan has launched the Writer's Prize for Africa to stimulate existing and potential writers. Click here to be directed to the Writer's Prize website.
