Ghana International
Book Fair 2000
The Third Ghana International Book Fair, 11-19 November 2000, with the theme 'A Reading
Child, an Enlightened Adult', lived up to expectations with a richly packed programme of
events.
Unimax Macmillan, alongside many other local and international partners in the book
industry, took part in the nine-day fair. UM's stands, among the first to be visited by
the Honourable Minister for Education, Mr Erkow Spio-Gabrah, attracted over 2000 visitors.
On display were our Supplementary Readers, Educational Textbooks, books on health,
business, and technology, the Primary Integrated Science 4, 5 & 6, the Basic Learners'
Dictionary, the Senior Secondary English book and wallcharts.
To demonstrate our commitment to the development of education in Ghana, we organised a
Reading Clinic in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Education office. 20 students
from selected schools from the Osu Klottey Sub-Metropolitan Area, Accra, explored reading
skills, comprehension, communication, pronunciation, intonation and stress with the help
of three resource staff.
We also organised a Reading Competition, with prizes of a wall clock, Macmillan
readers, T-shirts, pens and certificates awarded to Castle Road Basic JSS by Ms Juliana
Sackye, a retired librarian. Participants were entertained to a cultural display by a
group from Osu Ringway Estate JSS.
UM also sponsored a live radio quiz. Three senior secondary schools took part in the
show, answering questions on the company and its products. Abotsi Bright of Teshie
Presbyterian Secondary School emerged as the overall winner, with Francis Kassah of Nungua
Secondary and Anani Daniel of Tema Methodist Secondary also winning prizes.
In the course of the fair our visiting Sales and Marketing Manager, Steve Tweed, gave a
live interview to the main radio station in Accra, Radio GAR 95.7 FM, speaking about our
activities and products.
Our aims to promote our products, enhance our image, introduce new products, meet
potential buyers and build links with local communities were met. The book fair is growing
in strength and fast establishing Ghana's position as the leading educational and cultural
nation in the West African sub-region.
